PdNA Pilot Testing Using Biologically Activated Filter Media

This project is part of a multi-site research initiative led by AECOM to demonstrate and optimize partial denitrification anammox (PdNA) for energy- and carbon-efficient nitrogen removal. The overall program evaluates different biofilm media and supplemental carbon sources at six water resource recovery facilities, with the goal of accelerating PdNA commercialization while reducing energy use, supplemental carbon demand, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Caliskaner Water Technologies, Inc. (CWT) is supporting the PdNA demonstration conducted at the Linda County Water District using a biologically activated filter (BAF) media pilot system. CWT's responsibilities include coordinating site integration and installation activities, reviewing the pilot testing protocol, supporting system commissioning, and managing day-to-day pilot operation.

CWT also coordinates field activities and conducts sample collection, laboratory analyses, and operational data collection throughout the study. The monitoring program evaluates nitrogen species, soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended and volatile solids, anammox activity, and microbial characteristics to assess process performance and support optimization of the PdNA technology.
