Comparative evaluation of advanced primary treatment alternatives for wastewater intensification.
Caliskaner Water Technologies, Inc. (CWT) provided technical advisory services to Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) to evaluate the impacts of implementing primary filtration (PF) at the existing wastewater treatment plant. The study focused on determining how PF could affect treatment capacity, energy consumption, and resource recovery while supporting SVCW's long-term nutrient management targets.
The performance of PF was first evaluated through a 6-month pilot study. The pilot results were also incorporated into a facility-wide process model developed using SUMO to assess the feasibility and potential benefits of implementation. In addition to the modeling efforts, CWT conducted a hydraulic analysis to determine whether a gravity-fed primary filtration system could be incorporated into the existing facility.

Multiple treatment scenarios were evaluated based on anticipated future effluent nitrogen limits and the potential implementation of nutrient removal processes at SVCW. The study quantified the facility-wide impacts of primary filtration and provided technical guidance to support future planning, process optimization, and infrastructure investment decisions. The project was completed in 2024.
